Jorge Telerman (born November 29, 1955 in Buenos Aires ) is an Argentine politician and journalist. From March 13, 2006 to December 11, 2007 he was mayor of the capital Buenos Aires.

Life

Jorge Telerman was born in 1955 as the youngest of three sons in the Villa del Parque district. His parents, Damían and Fanny Telerman, were merchants and descended from Jewish immigrants who had fled persecution in Europe. He first attended an English-language primary school, but then switched to the República del Perú private school. He then attended a secondary school with a focus on chemistry. For the last three years of school he took late classes there so that he could work in a laboratory during the day. After leaving school, Telerman studied biochemistry at the Universidad de Buenos Aires for three years .

During the military dictatorship Telerman lived in France , where he worked as a musician and cook and attended lectures in philosophy at the University of Aix-en-Provence . In 1980 he returned to Argentina and met his future wife, the actress Eva Píccolo. The couple have two children: Federico and Catalina. In Buenos Aires he enrolled in journalism at the Centro de Estudios Buenos Aires, where he met the semiologist Oscar Steimberg and specialized in semiology himself.

Telerman began to write articles for "Medios & Comunicación". In 1982 he switched to “Don” magazine, where Abelardo Ramos, Dalmiro Sáenz and Ana María Shua were among his colleagues. In 1984 he became a lecturer at the Universidad de Buenos Aires for semiology and also lecturer at the Colegio Argentino de Filosofía, where he taught philosophy. As a journalist, he has worked for the print media, radio and television. In 1998 Telerman, together with partners, founded La Trastienda , a theater and concert hall in the San Telmo district (Buenos Aires)

Political career

Telerman began to be politically active at an early age. He was a student representative in secondary school and a member of the Young Communists of Argentina (FEDE). Influenced by his father's political ideas, he became a member of the Peronist Party in 1974. He was spokesman for Antonio Cafiero , who became governor of the province of Buenos Aires in 1987 . In 1990 he became the press attaché of the Argentine ambassador Guido di Tella in the USA . Further tasks in the diplomatic service followed, in 1998 Telerman became the Argentine ambassador to Cuba . He returned to Buenos Aires to work for Eduardo Duhalde on the campaign team . In 1999 he was elected to the Chamber of Deputies .

Telerman was cultural secretary for the city of Buenos Aires between 2000 and 2003. His accomplishments led to his appointment as Vice Mayor on December 10, 2003 under Aníbal Ibarra . As such he was responsible for the social development of the city and was president of the city parliament. After Ibarra was dismissed as a result of the fire in the República Cromañón discotheque, Telerman moved to the mayor's office. In the next regular election in 2007 he ran for office, but was only third with 20.7% of the vote (behind Daniel Filmus and Mauricio Macri ).
