José Câncio Martins

José Luis Faria Câncio Martins (born March 13, 1936 in Sintra ) is a Portuguese civil engineer.

Cancio Martins studied at the Instituto Superior Técnico in Lisbon , graduating in 1959. He then worked as an engineer for the Portuguese military in what was then the Portuguese colony of Angola . In 1963 he founded his own engineering office, which still exists today. In 1965 he joined the General Directorate of Civil Aviation in Portugal. He stayed there until 1972 when he joined the office in Sines and took over the management of the DGAC's construction projects. First he was head of the urban development projects and then head of the project department until 1981. After that he was again an independent engineer.

He is known for a number of large bridge projects, including a number of motorway bridges in Portugal, but also for the railroad. His engineering office also worked on industrial buildings, marine structures, high-rise buildings and tunnels.

In 1984 he received the International Award of Merit in Structural Engineering . In 2006 he received the Ordem do Mérito Grande-Oficial and in 1995 he received the Prémio Secil for the Sino-Portuguese Friendship Bridge (Ponte de Amizade) in Macau . The Puente Internacional del Guadiana is one of its bridges .

He was visiting professor at Coimbra University .

In 2007 he received the Albert Caquot Prize .
