José Delaquerriere

José Mario Louis Delaquerrière (born September 16, 1886 in Paris , † April 10, 1978 in Montreal ) was a French-Canadian operetta singer ( tenor ), composer and vocal teacher .

Life

Delaquerrière had his first singing lessons from his parents, the operetta singer Louis Delaquerrière and the concert singer Louise de Miramont-Tréogate . He then studied singing, music theory and various musical instruments at the Schola Cantorum . His teachers included u. a. Charles Bordes , Vincent d'Indy , Gabriel Fauré , Amédée Gastoué , Gabriel Grovlez and Guy de LaTombelle . At the Conservatoire de Paris he was a student of Edmond Duvernoy and Émile Pessard .

He began his career as an operetta singer at the Theater Gaieté-lyrique and continued it after his time as a volunteer in the First World War in Paris and the French provinces. In 1923 he traveled to Canada and performed at the St-Denis Theater in La Mascotte , La Fille de Madame Angot , Les Cloches de Corneville and Le Grand Mogol . He also took part in the North American premiere of Igor Stravinski's opera Renard with the Philadelphia Orchestra under the direction of Leopold Stokowski . In 1924 he took part in the concerts of the International Composers 'Guild organized by Edgard Varèse in New York and sang solo roles in Giacomo Carissimi's Jephte and Arthur Bliss ' The Tempest .

After his return to Europe he continued his career as an operetta singer, appeared on the radio and taught. In 1938 he moved to Montreal, and in 1958 he received Canadian citizenship. In addition to numerous appearances on radio and television, he mainly devoted himself to teaching in Montreal: He founded the Conservatoire Populaire Delaquerrière , where he gave free singing lessons to more than 8,000 young Montreal students by 1966; he also founded and directed the Chœur de France . Since 1951 he was a teacher at the Province of Quebec Music Conservatory .

Delaquerrière composed more than two hundred works, in addition to songs with piano or orchestral accompaniment, piano pieces and compositions for other instruments. In 1975 he was honored as a member of the Order of Canada . In 1976 he published the book Savoir chanter , which was published in a revised edition in 2008. Delaquerrière recorded as a singer for His Master's Voice in Montreal and Pathé in Paris.
