José Eduardo da Costa Meneses

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

José Eduardo da Costa Meneses was a Portuguese officer and colonial administrator. From 1864 to 1865 he was governor of Portuguese Timor .

Service on Timor

His soldiers in the colony rebelled against the predecessor of Meneses, José Manuel Pereira de Almeida (1863 to 1864), as there were repeated delays in the payment of wages due to a lack of cash and Almeida maintained a dictatorial style of leadership. Almeida had to flee the colony. A Conselho Governativo led the administration of the colony for two months until Meneses arrived . Meneses had no choice but to take out a loan from the neighboring governor-general of the Dutch East Indies for the missing pay . When Meneses returned to Lisbon in 1865 due to illness , he was brought to justice because he had exceeded his competencies by borrowing. Meneses died during the trial. Francisco Teixeira da Silva , his successor as governor, had to eliminate the unpleasant consequences of the mutiny. However, Silva withdrew promotions and pay increases by his predecessor.
