José Fortunati, Mayor of the Brazilian city of Porto Alegre from 2010 to 2016

José Alberto Reus Fortunati (born October 24, 1955 in Flores da Cunha , Rio Grande do Sul ) is a Brazilian politician who was mayor of Porto Alegre from 2010 to 2016 .

biography

Fortunati studied law, mathematics, public administration and corporate management at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul .

In 1980, still during the military dictatorship , Fortunati helped found the branch of the PT workers' party in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. From February 1, 1987 to March 14, 1990 he was a member of the Legislative Assembly of Rio Grande do Sul . From March 15, 1990 to December 31, 1996 Fortunati sat for the PT of his state in the Brazilian Chamber of Deputies . In 2001 he left the party and in 2002 joined the Partido Democrático Trabalhista (PDT). He also left national politics and focused on his state of Rio Grande do Sul. In 2008 he was elected Vice Mayor of the local capital, Porto Alegre. On March 30, 2010, he took over the office of mayor. In the 2012 local elections, Fortunati was re-elected for the second term from 2013 to 2016 with 65.22% of the votes in the first ballot. In 2018 Fortunati changed sides again and joined the Partido Socialista Brasileiro , but did not stay there long. On suspicion of corruption, the judiciary froze his private assets in May 2018.

Since 2016 without an elected office, Fortunati announced in 2019 that he would move to Portugal to do his Masters in Political Science at the Instituto Universitário de Lisboa (ISCTE) .
