José Joaquín de Viana

José Joaquín de Viana (* 1718 in Lagran , Basque Country Spain , † December 14, 1773 in Buenos Aires ) was a Spanish politician and military of Basque origin. From March 14, 1751 to April 8, 1764 and again from 1771 to February 1773 he was governor of Montevideo in what is now Uruguay, South America . Among other things, he founded the city of Maldonado in 1755 and was also the founder of today's Uruguayan cities of San Carlos and Salto .

The country residence of the governor de Viana, built around 1750, still exists today as a ruin, making it the oldest surviving structure from this phase of the colonial era in the city of Montevideo. It is located north of what is now Barrio Atahualpa in the area enclosed by Calle Atahona and Calle Reyes and Calle Valdenbegro .
