José Luis Cancela Gómez (* 1961 in Montevideo ) is a Uruguayan diplomat .

José Luis Cancela completed his school education at the Colegio de la Inmaculada Concepción - Padres Bayoneses - in Montevideo. He studied at the Universidad de la República and has been with the Uruguayan Foreign Ministry since 1988. There he was entrusted with various tasks in the period that followed. From 1991 to 1993 he worked in the Uruguayan embassy in Bulgaria and from 1993 to 1996 in the Uruguayan diplomatic mission in Belgium . Cancela was Deputy Head of Mission in the Uruguayan Embassy in Spain from 2000 to 2005 and served as Counselor in 2002 . From 2005 he held the post of Secretary General in the Uruguayan Foreign Ministry. In 2006 he was envoy counselor . Cancela was appointed Permanent Representative of Uruguay to the United Nations on August 31, 2008 . In this position he was replaced by Gonzalo Koncke on January 10, 2014 .

Cancela has four children with his wife Alejandra. He is an avowed supporter of Club Atlético Peñarol .
