Life

Hans von Lieres came from a noble Silesian family. His parents emigrated from Germany to South Africa in 1925 . During the Simba uprising in the Congo von Lieres served from September 1964 under Captain Ian Gordon in the 57th Command , a platoon of the 5th Command led by Mike Hoare . During the advance on Kisangani in November 1964, von Lieres was injured in the leg and head in a battle on November 24th. He was flown to Johannesburg , where the bullet was removed from his head.

In January 1965 he was working as a recruiting officer in Johannesburg. In February he returned to the 5th Command, which Mike Hoare had reorganized to cut off the Simba rebels from their supplies from Sudan and Uganda in Operation White Giant . Hoare promoted von Lieres to lieutenant and gave him command of the 52nd Command , previously commanded by Siegfried Müller . Half of the unit consisted of Germans who had previously mostly served in the Bundeswehr . In an attack on March 25th together with the 55th Command on the village of Wawa on the border with Uganda, the units were ambushed. Von Lieres' forearm was shattered by a bullet and the artery severed. He was flown out by helicopter and treated in Johannesburg.

In August 1965 he signed his third contract for the 5th Command , stationed in Albertville. His unit consisted of 20 Germans. During the amphibious operation of the 5th Command across Lake Tanganyika near Baraka on September 27, von Lieres landed as beach master with the first wave. At the end of November, Hans von Lieres died in a car accident on the main street of Albertville when his jeep collided with a parked truck at night. A few days earlier, von Lieres had submitted his departure. The next day he wanted to travel back to South Africa. Von Lieres was buried in the family grave in Vanrhynsdorp .
