Vanrhynsdorp is a place in the Matzikama municipality in the West Coast District , Western Cape Province in South Africa . In 2011 it had 6,272 inhabitants. The place is 300 kilometers north of Cape Town at the intersection of the N7 with the R27, which leads to Nieuwoudtville .
history
In 1751 the city was founded as Trutro (Troe-Troe), which is said to be derived from the war cry Toro-Toro of the Khoikhoi and means something like "attack-attack". In 1881 the name was changed to Van Rhijnsdorp to honor the Rhijns family who had done much for the local community as church leaders and justice of the peace. Vanrhynsdorp is the oldest city in Namaqualand and therefore one of the oldest in South Africa.
Attractions
In Vanrhynsdorp three "botanical kingdoms" come together:
- Nama Karoo vegetation ,
- Succulents in the Knersvlakte
- Cape fynbos in the surrounding mountains.
After the winter rain , in spring (July / August) the landscape around the city is covered with a multitude of flowers.
There are around a series of rock drawings of the San .
The Kokkerboom Nursery (also known as Kern Succulent Nursery ) at the end of Voortrekker Street is considered to be the largest succulent nursery in South Africa.
