José Luis Cantero
José Luis Cantero , known as El Fary , (born August 20, 1937 in Madrid , † June 19, 2007 there ) was a Spanish singer .
Career
Cantero grew up in a poor family in the area around the Las Ventas bullring . Cantero started working in a bar when he was 13. Later he was a delivery man for a fruit store and worked with his brother as a gardener. He only learned to read and write while doing military service. At the end of it he got his driver's license and worked as a taxi driver for seven years. With the money he saved, along with what brought him a newly opened bar, he paid for his albums, which he still sold personally at the famous Rastro in Madrid.
His first success came in the mid-1980s with the song "El torito guapo" ("The beautiful little bull"). In the 1990s he was at the peak of his career with the lead role in a Spanish television series and the song of one of the most popular Spanish films, Torrente .
He chose his stage name after the Spanish singer Rafael Farina , whom he greatly admired.
El Fary has written more than 200 songs, released over 30 albums and was the musical “godfather” of many young talents.
The “King of Rumba Pop” died on June 19, 2007 at the age of 69 of lung cancer .
