José Luis Cuevas

José Luis Cuevas (born February 26, 1934 in Mexico City ; † July 3, 2017 there ) was a contemporary Mexican painter , printmaker , sculptor , illustrator, lithographer and author.

Cuevas learned the artistic craft in self-study and did not attend any art school or academy. At the Escuela Nacional de Pintura, Escultura y Grabado "La Esmeralda" he only completed one course. Cuevas was a member of Galería Prisse in Mexico City in the 1950s , where he had his first solo exhibition in 1953, and was part of the so-called Generación de la Ruptura . In 1959 he was awarded the graphic prize at the 5th  São Paulo Biennale , received the Mexican National Prize for Sciences and Arts in 1981 , the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in France in 1991 and the "Tomás-Francisco-Prieto" from the Queen of Spain in 1997 -Price. He wrote for a while for the Mexican weekly newspaper " Excélsior ".

He exhibited his works in various major American and European cities, including in numerous solo exhibitions. In 1977 he was represented at documenta 6 . In his hometown there is the museum for contemporary art named after him, " Museo José Luis Cuevas ".
