The Escuela Nacional de Pintura, Escultura y Grabado "La Esmeralda" (ENPEG) in Mexico City has its origins in the 1927 by Guillermo Ruiz in the former monastery complex " Convento de la Merced " (now known as "Exconvento de la Merced") founded sculpture and wood carving school, and is now an institution of the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes y Literatura (INBAL).

history

In the 1930s the establishment moved to the alley from which it got its name “La Esmeralda”. Raúl Anguiano , Feliciano Peña and José Chávez Morado taught at the school run by Ruiz . In 1943, the painter Antonio M. Ruiz took over the management of the school, which up until then had been rather provisional. He redesigned the building, divided the training into several classes and developed the first curriculum. With the approval of the curriculum by the Secretaría de Educación Pública , the school officially became an art school in 1943. Major teachers at this time included the artists Diego Rivera , Francisco Zúñiga , Frida Kahlo , Carlos Orozco Romero , María Izquierdo and Agustín Lazo . In 1994 “La Esmeralda” moved its headquarters to the Guerrero settlement in the art center Centro Nacional de las Artes . Karla Alexandra Villegas Ramírez has been director since 2018.

German partner schools of ENPEG are the State Academy of Fine Arts Karlsruhe and the University of Fine Arts Braunschweig .
