José Luis Melena Jiménez

José Luis Melena Jiménez (* 1946 in Donostia , Gipuzkoa , Spain ) is a Spanish ( Basque ) classical philologist ( Graecist ) and Mycenaeologist .

Life

Melena studied Classical Philology at the Complutense University of Madrid . After completing his doctorate, he taught ancient Greek language and literature at the Complutense University of Madrid, at the Torres Villarroel Institute in Salamanca and at the La Laguna University . Since 1983 he has been Full Professor (catedrático) at the University of the Basque Country ( Gasteiz Campus ). In 1999 he was awarded the Euskadi Ikerketa Prize, and in 2000 he received the Premio Munibe for 1999 from the Parliament of the Basque Country ( Eusko Legebiltzarrak ) and the Real Sociedad Bascongada de Amigos del País ( Euskalerriaren Adiskideen Elkartea ) .

Melena was also director of the Instituto Cultural Español Reina Sofía (now Instituto Cervantes ) in Athens and cultural attaché of the Spanish embassy in Athens.

Research areas

In the past, Melena has dealt with general and comparative linguistics in the form of transcriptions of relevant English-language works, including the introduction by Leonard Robert Palmer . He has also published a commemorative publication for the linguist and leading bascologist of his time, Koldo Mitxelena Elissalt (1915–1987, also called Luis Michelena).

In the field of Mycenology, Melena has published on numerous individual aspects of Mycenaean Greek and works closely with leading scholars. With the Spanish Graecist and linguist Martín S. Ruipérez he has published an introduction to the Mycenaean language and culture. Melena is also editor of the magazine Minos: Revista de Filología Egea with Thomas G. Palaima .
