Thomas G. Palaima

Thomas G. Palaima (born October 6, 1951 in Cleveland, Ohio ) is an American classical philologist and mycenologist .

Life

After studying mathematics and classical studies at Boston College , which he graduated with a BA in 1973, Palaima received his doctorate in 1980 from the University of Wisconsin – Madison in Classical Philology . From 1985 to 1990 he held a MacArthur Fellowship to study the Aegean writing systems . He is now the Robert M. Armstrong Centennial Professor and founding director of the Program in Aegean Scripts and Prehistory (PASP) in the Department of Classical Philology at the University of Texas at Austin .

Palaima works in particular on palaeography , writing systems and the use of Linear B tablets in research into early Greek history.

In 1994 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from Uppsala University .

Palaima has published on many other topics as well, in the form of book reviews, violence and war, especially music and Bob Dylan and university sports.
