Ronald "Ron" Fintushel (* 1946 ) is an American mathematician who deals with low-dimensional geometric topology (especially of 4- manifolds ) and the mathematics of gauge field theories .

Fintushel studied mathematics at Columbia University with a bachelor's degree in 1967 and at the University of Illinois , where he received his master's degree in 1969, and received his doctorate in 1975 under Louis McAuley at the State University of New York in Binghamton ( Orbit maps of local -actions on manifolds of dimension less than five ). He was a professor at Tulane University and is a professor at Michigan State University .

His field of work is geometric topology in particular of 4-manifolds (including the calculation of Donaldson invariants) with connections to gauge field theories, knot theory and symplectic geometry. He works closely with Ronald J. Stern .

In 1998 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Berlin ( Construction of smooth 4-manifolds with Ronald J. Stern). In 1997 he received the Distinguished Faculty Award from Michigan State University.

He is a fellow of the American Mathematical Society . Fintushel is editor of Geometry and Topology and the Michigan Mathematical Journal .
