José Luis Rodríguez Vélez

José Luis Rodríguez Vélez (born March 12, 1915 in Santiago de Veraguas ; † December 21, 1984 in Panama City ) was a Panamanian composer, orchestra and choir director, saxophonist, clarinetist and guitarist. He composed cumbia , boleros , pasillos, waltzes , dances and marches . He was a music teacher at the Escuela Normal de Santiago , the Instituto Justo Arosemena and the Instituto Urracá . He organized music festivals and music competitions. As a professional musician, he founded and directed the Orquesta El Patio as well as choirs, orchestras and music groups in the Panamá region .

For a life devoted to education, the Panamanian government awarded him the Order of Manuel José Hurtado in 1975 , the most important award for educators and educational institutions in the Republic of Panama.
