Santiago de Veraguas is the capital of the Veraguas Province in Panama and has around 90,000 inhabitants.

history

Foundation and colonial times

Santiago Cathedral

Santiago was founded in the 17th century by citizens of the neighboring towns of Montijo and Santa Fe de Veraguas. The new foundation should serve as a starting point for shooting the surrounding area. Santiago is first mentioned in 1621 in manuscript 2930 of the National Library of Panama. Santiago belonged to the Real Audiencia de Panamá in the viceroyalty of New Granada , which was incorporated into the Comandancia General de Tierra Firme after an administrative reform in 1751 .

independence

From Spain

On November 28, 1821, Panama City declared independence from Spain. Veraguas province followed suit on December 4th of the same year.

From Colombia

After Panama declared itself independent from Colombia on November 3, 1903 , the more conservative province of Veraguas followed suit six days later.

Economic boom in the 20th century

Escuela normal

Like the entire province of Veraguas, Santiago was shaped by agriculture and at the beginning of the 20th century was little more than the ecclesiastical, administrative and commercial center for the small hamlets in the area. When Juan Demóstenes Arosemena Barreati was elected President of Panama in 1936, a new chapter began for Santiago. Instead of the current planning for a state with two very well developed centers (Panama City for the eastern and David for the western half of the country), Arosemena wanted to create a state in which all regions could develop. He chose Santiago as the location of the Escuela Normal , the first teacher training college in Panama. Many young people then moved to Santiago. The city grew and "swallowed" some of the surrounding villages that are now part of the city of Santiago.

Attractions

The most famous sight is the cathedral of the 1963 built diocese of Santiago de Veraguas , the largest church in the city. The main shopping street is Avenida Central near the cathedral, shopping centers are the Galería and Plaza Banconal .

economy

The main sources of income in the province of Veraguas are agriculture and animal husbandry. Santiago benefits from this as a market town and as the location of a (very modest) food industry. There are also some tanneries and pottery shops .

traffic

The Panamericana runs as a two-lane highway through the middle of Santiago. With intercity buses, Santiago can be easily reached from almost all parts of the country. The official taxi rank is also located at the bus station. There are around 330 taxis in Santiago (as of 2011). There is an airport not far from the city for domestic flights.
