David is the capital of the Chiriquí province of the Central American state Panama and has around 124,500 inhabitants (2006 calculation) . The Panamericana runs northwest of the city .
The city, which is officially called San José de David , is considered to be the hottest city in Panama with temperatures usually above 30 degrees Celsius . In the past, livestock and agriculture were the main activities. However, the city is also an important hub for trips to the highlands around Boquete and Volcán , Parque Nacional Volcán Barú and the islands of the Golfo de Chiriquí . With the Aeropuerto Enrique Malek , the city has its own airport.
David is now the third largest city in Panama and also serves as a financial center and exhibition center. It is also a location for telecommunications and high technology. Some consumer goods manufacturers have also settled in the greater David area in association with heavy industry.
Since 1955 the city has been the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of David . The church of San José , built at the end of the 19th century, became a cathedral .
