José María Cabral (politician)

José María Cabral (born December 16, 1816 in Ingenio Nuevo , † February 28, 1899 in Santo Domingo ) was a Dominican politician and President of the Dominican Republic from 1866 to 1868.

Cabral studied in England and then embarked on a military career. As commander in chief on the southern border, he defeated the army of Emperor Faustin I of Haiti in the battle of Santomé in November 1855 and became an officer in Pedro Santana's general staff. In 1857 he used troops to protect President Buenaventura Báez from an attempted coup by his opponents. In 1863 he joined the Restoration War to regain statehood of the Dominican Republic and in 1864 defeated the Spanish troops at La Canela.

In January 1865 Cabral became a member of the Junta Superior Gubernativa , in May of the same year he was elected MP for San Juan. His proclamation as Protector and President of the Republic followed on August 4th . In this capacity he banned exile and the death penalty for political reasons. In November he became a member of Pedro Guillermo's Provisional Government, in December he became Secretary of State for War and the Navy.

In 1866, Cabral was from which Antonio Pimentel , Gregorio Luperon , and Federico de Jesús García existing Triunvirato appointed president. After negotiating the sale of Samaná Bay with the United States , he was deposed in January 1868. After a reconciliation with President Báez, he returned to politics ten years later as Secretary for War and Navy and Minister for Internal Affairs and Police.
