José María de Peralta y La Vega

José María de Peralta y La Vega (born September 28, 1763 in Jaén , Spain ; † August 7, 1836 in Cartago , Costa Rica ) was head of state of Costa Rica from April 16 to May 10, 1823 .

Life

His parents Antonia de la Vega y Castañeda and Sebastián José de Peralta y Barrios (1735–1800) married in 1754. His great uncle, Juan Tomás de Peralta y Franco de Medina, was the first Marquesado de Peralta , the title was given to him in 1738 by Charles VI . awarded. In 1531 Clement VII founded the Diocese of Nicaragua with its seat in León to which Costa Rica belonged since 1545. José María de Peralta y La Vega left Spain in 1777 in the service of Monseñor Esteban Lorenzo de Tristán y Esmenola, who had recently been appointed Bishop of Nicaragua and Costa Rica. His family planned a career in the Church for him. In 1782 he accompanied the prelate on his visit to Costa Rica and settled in Cartago .

The first time he married on April 12, 1783 in Cartago Ana Benita Nava López del Corral († March 11, 1812), the daughter of Joaquina López del Corral y Arburolades and the governor José Joaquín de Nava y Cabezudo. In this first marriage, José Francisco, Manuel María, José Mercedes, Sinforosa, Nicolás, Pedro, Francisco Javier, María Bartola, José María, Telésforo and Gertrudis de Peralta y López del Corral were born.

The second time he married on October 29, 1816 in Cartago, Ana Basilia de Alvarado y Oreamuno (1792-1865), the daughter of Joefa Bartola de Oreamuno y Alvarado and José Rafael de Alvarado y Baeza. In the second marriage, Joaquín Esteban, María Águeda, Magdalena, Mercedes, Bernardino, Francisco Manuel and María Inés de Peralta y Alvarado were born.

In 1785 he became Procurator Syndico , trustee of Carthago and in 1787 Alcalde provincial de la Santa Hermandad de Cartago .

From 1788 to 1789 he was deputy warehouse manager, from 1789 to 1792, from 1797 to 1808 and from 1831 to 1834 he was management acounter in the royal Factoría de Tabacos de Costa Rica .

In 1808, 1809 and 1815 he was the first mayor of Carthago. In 1811 and 1814 he was Procurator Syndico , legal administrator of Carthago. In 1821 he was Regidor of Carthago.

He was a captain in the colonial militia of Costa Rica.

His son José Francisco de Peralta y López del Corral was with Manuel de Jesús Alvarado e Hidalgo according to the Pacto de Concordia of December 1, 1821, delegated for Costa Rica to the Congreso Constituyente de México 1821 , he received instructions on voting behavior and in September 1822 In October 1822 the first Congreso Constituyente de México was dissolved.

Member and chairman of the Junta Superior Gubernativa

In January 1822 he was elected to the Junta Superior Gubernativa , which ruled Costa Rica. He chaired this junta from July 15 to October 17, 1822. From November 22nd to December 9th, he represented the sick José Rafael de Gallegos y Alvarado as chairman.

In 1823 he became a constituent delegate for the province of Costa Rica. This parliament appointed him head of state of Costa Rica an office which he should have held until 1831 and whose tasks are comparable to those of a Ministro de Gobernación , (government minister).

His term of office as head of state was from April 16 to May 10, 1823. Caused by differences of opinion with the commander-in-chief of the army Gregorio José Ramírez y Castro , power was transferred to the third Junta Superior Gubernativa , which was chaired by the priest Manuel Alvarado e Hidalgo.

After the presidency

From 1824 to 1825 he was Minister General. In 1835 he was retired.

Members of the Peralta family are widespread in the Costa Rican diplomatic service and the Holy See. His grandson Manuel María de Peralta y Alfaro was in the diplomatic service of Costa Rica. Another descendant of Hernán Gregorio Peralta Quirós, Costa Rican ambassador to Peru from 1953 to 1954, published a biography in 1956 with the ambiguous title, José María de Peralta .
