José mentor

José Mentor Guilherme de Mello Netto , known as José Mentor , (born September 30, 1948 in Santa Isabel , State of São Paulo , Brazil , † July 25, 2020 in São Paulo ) was a Brazilian lawyer and politician . He was a member of the Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT), city council, state and federal representative.

José Mentor was the son of Assi's mentor Couto Mello and Encarnação Mentor Couto Mello, who named him after his grandfather of the same name, which is why the suffix grandson was added to him. He studied at the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo from 1967 to 1971 law and worked from then on as a lawyer. During this time of the military dictatorship he was politicized by the student movements and was arrested several times. He joined the former Movimento Democrático Brasileiro in 1977 , but his political career only began as a founding member of the Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT) workers' party in 1979, in which he later held offices.

After the military dictatorship, he became a member of the legislative assembly of the state of São Paulo from 1989 to 1991 (11th legislative period) and was elected to the Assembleia Constituinte Paulista in 1988 with 16,266 votes , which gave the state a new constitution. From 1993 to 2003 he was city councilor (vereador) of the city of São Paulo, which developed into a metropolis of 10 million people during this period.

Simultaneously with the successful candidacy of his party comrade Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva for president , he was successfully elected to the Chamber of Deputies of the National Congress in his home state . He took office on February 1, 2003 and, after being re-elected three times, held it uninterruptedly until 2019.

Controversy

Mentor was also accused of involvement in Operation Lava Jato .

Illness and death

José Mentor was admitted to a hospital in São Paulo on July 12, 2020 and died there on July 25, 2020 at the age of 71 as a result of COVID-19 . Numerous expressions of condolences were made, including from Brazil's former President Lula da Silva . Mentor was buried in the Congonhas cemetery.
