José Ramón Fernández
José Ramón Carlos Fernández Álvarez (born November 4, 1923 in Santiago de Cuba , † January 6, 2019 in Havana ) was a Cuban politician and military. He was a commander during the Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba, co-founder of the Communist Party, and was a member of the party's Central Committee since the first congress in 1975; he was also a deputy member of the Politburo between 1981 and 1993 . From 1997 to October 2018 he was President of the Cuban Olympic Committee and was Vice-President of the Council of Ministers . His last military rank was Brigadier General .
He has been awarded numerous orders and medals for his services. In 2001 he was given the honorary title "Hero of the Republic of Cuba".
