José Ramos Preto

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

José Ramos Preto (* 1871 in Louriçal do Campo , Castelo Branco ; † January 7, 1949 ibid) was a Portuguese lawyer and politician . From June 6 to June 26, 1920, during the first republic, he was brief prime minister of his country.

Life

José Ramos Preto was one of the richest landowners in his hometown and therefore had considerable political influence in Castelo Branco. He was rector of the local high school, civil governor and elected senator for the Castelo Branco district. When the Portuguese Prime Minister António Maria Baptista suffered a stroke during a cabinet meeting on June 6, 1920 and died, Ramos Preto was elected to succeed him. The Ramos Preto government was purely a transitional government; he had to resign on June 18. Since the search for a successor turned out to be difficult, he remained in office until June 26, when António Maria da Silva was elected as the new Prime Minister.
