José Ignacio Salafranca Sánchez-Neyra (born May 31, 1955 in Madrid ) is a Spanish politician of the Partido Popular .

Life

Salafranca studied law at the Universidad Complutense in Madrid and obtained the diploma in European integration at the Diplomatic School of Madrid and the National Institute of Public Administration. He worked as a lecturer in civil law at the Center for Higher Education and European Communities at the Madrid Diplomatic School and as a lecturer in European communities at several European universities. At the European Commission he was a civil servant and deputy director of the cabinet for Commissioners Abel Matutes and Marcelino Oreja . He was also the legal advisor to the Agency for Livestock Development of the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and to the Staff of Technical Inspectors for Transport of the Spanish Ministry of Transport, Tourism and Communication, where he previously headed the International Cooperation Service.

Salafranca Sánchez-Neyra has been a member of the European Parliament since 1994 . From 2001 to 2004 he was deputy chairman of the EPP parliamentary group, of which he was also a member of the board and of which he was spokesman in the foreign affairs committee. For the European Parliament he held a number of other leading positions, mainly related to non-European affairs. For example, he led the Arab Spring Countries Observation Group and led several election observation missions. He was the representative of the European Parliament at numerous summits between the EU and Latin America and the Caribbean . He has received numerous prestigious awards from various Latin American countries.

In the EU parliamentary period from 2009 to 2014 he is a member of the executive board of his group, the European People's Party and chairman of the delegation to the Euro-Latin American Parliamentary Assembly. He is a member of the Conference of Delegation Chairs and the Committee on Foreign Affairs as well as the delegation to the EU-Mexico Joint Parliamentary Committee. He is a deputy on the Security and Defense Subcommittee and on the Delegation for Relations with the United States.

He is one of the 89 people from the European Union against whom Russia imposed an entry ban in May 2015 .
