José Tagarro

José Tagarro (born March 30, 1902 in Cartaxo , Santarém district , † July 12, 1931 in Lisbon ) was a Portuguese painter and draftsman. The painter, who died young, was considered a representative of Second Modernism in Portugal and a hopeful talent in Portuguese painting.

Life

Tagarro studied from 1920 to 1927 at the Escola de Belas Artes in Lisbon, his fellow students included Sarah Afonso and Ruy Gameiro , the son of the well-known painter Roque Gameiro . In 1929 he stayed in Paris for a few months to study at an art school .

Tagarro took part with his works for the first time in 1926 at the 2nd Salão de Outono and at the Salons of the Sociedade Nacional de Belas Artes in 1927 and 1930. In 1928 he had his first solo exhibition in Lisbon. Further exhibitions in Lisbon and Porto followed. He also illustrated magazines, such as the cover picture of Seara Nova . As a painter he was primarily active as a portraitist. He was influenced by Fauvism , Ferdinand Hodler , El Greco , Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres . As a portraitist, he drew an important picture of the painter Roque Gameiro.

In 1945 an art prize for painting was named after him as Premio José Tagarro . A street is named after him in his hometown of Cartaxo.

On July 12, 1931, the painter died of meningitis at the age of only 29 .
