Joseph L. Taylor

Joseph Lawrence Taylor ( April 7, 1941 - July 28, 2016 in Salt Lake City , Utah ) was an American mathematician .

Live and act

Taylor studied at Louisiana State University , where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1963 and a Ph.D. in 1964. received his doctorate . His doctoral supervisor was Pasquale Porcelli . From 1964 to 1965 he was a lecturer at Harvard University . In 1965 he moved to the University of Utah , where he was initially an assistant professor, later an associate professor and in 1971 became a full professor. In 1969 he became a research fellow of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation ( Sloan Research Fellowship ). In 1975 he received the Leroy P. Steele Prize for his work Measure algebras . From 1979 to 1982 he headed the Mathematics Department, from 1985 to 1987 he was Dean and from 1987 to 1990 Academic Vice President of the University of Utah.
