Jose ben Jehuda

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rabbi Jose ben Jehuda (ben Ilai) (also: Jose ben Juda ) (he worked in the 2nd century AD) was a 4th generation Tannait , often in controversy with Rabbi (= Jehuda ha-Nasi ).

His father is said to have been the famous Juda ben Ilai and also his teacher. Jose ben Jehuda was also called Rabbi Katnutha ("the last of the truly pious") because of his piety and humility . It occurs in the 2nd to 5th Mischna order , otherwise only in the Tossefta of the first and sixth order.

The question of whether Jose Proselyt is supposed to have been is discussed in the Hebrew historical literature and answered in various ways ( seder hadorot pro versus juchasin contra).

Jose ben Jehuda narrates the popular belief to greet the two "angels of service" on Friday evening ( bShabbat 119b).

In the sayings of the fathers , the following sayings are handed down from him (IV., 26):

“Who learns from young people, who is he like? For those who enjoy unripe grapes and drink wine from the press.
But who learns from old people, who is he like? He who enjoys ripe grapes and drinks old wine. "
