Josef Adam Braun

Josef Adam Brown ( Russian Иосиф Адам Браун * 1712 in Asch , † September 22 . Jul / 3. October  1768 greg. In St. Petersburg ) was a German- Russian physicist and university teacher .

Life

Braun came to St. Petersburg and in 1746 became a member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences . In 1748 he became professor of philosophy at the Academy-University of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences. He was the first to reach the low temperature of −42  ° C in the laboratory , so that he and Mikhail Lomonossow could determine the freezing point of mercury while studying the properties of mercury . Thereupon he examined in particular the deformation behavior of the solid mercury. It reached temperatures of -65 ° C.

Braun also worked in the field of meteorology and philosophy. He developed his own theory of gravity .

Braun was married to Georg Wilhelm Richmann's widow.
