Josef Aretz

Josef Aretz (born April 25, 1929 , † December 23, 2012 ) was a German teacher and local history researcher .

For decades, Josef Aretz devoted himself to researching the history of Kohlscheid , in particular the history of mining, the parish of St. Katharina and club life. For his services to local research he was awarded the Rhineland Thaler (1993) and the Federal Medal of Merit .

Aretz was a full-time secondary school teacher and from 1968 until his retirement in 1992 was the principal of the community secondary school in Kohlscheid.

After his death, Josef Aretz was buried in the Oststrasse cemetery in Herzogenrath ; the resurrection service previously took place in the parish church of St. Katharina.

In 2016, Josef-Aretz-Strasse was named after him in the “Kämpchenstrasse” development area in Kohlscheid .
