Josef Dechant

Josef Dechant (born May 18, 1942 in the Lengau district of Schneegattern) is a former Austrian politician ( ÖVP ) and was mayor of the city of Salzburg from 1992 to 1999 .

Political career

Dechant began his political career in 1967 as the secretary of the then Vice Mayor and later Governor Wilfried Haslauer . In 1980 he became a member of the local council and in 1987 joined the Salzburg city council as deputy mayor. In 1992 he succeeded Harald Lettner (SPÖ) as mayor and held this office until 1999. He was the only elected ÖVP mayor of Salzburg to date. The first ÖVP mayor, Richard Hildmann , was appointed by the US military government in 1945.

In 2005 Dechant was made an honorary citizen of Salzburg.

Since 1967 he has been a member of the Catholic student association KÖHV Rupertina Salzburg in the ÖCV .
