Politics and functions

Lettner joined the Socialist Party of Salzburg in 1968 and was elected section chairman of the SPÖ Liefering-Mitte in 1977, where he held this position until 1987. He was also active from 1980 to 1988 as Salzburg's regional chairman of the Association of Social Democratic Academics, Intellectuals and Artists , worked within the party as a member of the regional party presidium of the Salzburg Social Democratic Party and was sworn in as a member of the Salzburg state parliament on September 19, 1984. He was a member of this until September 12, 1989, and in 1989 he was also the chairman of the Social Democratic Landtag Club. In the city of Salzburg Lettner had already worked as a member of the municipal council from 1977 to 1984, after which he was vice mayor of the city of Salzburg from 1989 to 1990. After Salzburg's mayor Josef Reschen had to resign in the course of the WEB scandal in 1990, Lettner was elected mayor of Salzburg in 1990. With his move to the mayor's office, however, he also inherited conflict-prone issues such as the design of the station forecourt and the renovation of the convention center, as well as internal party conflicts over the succession of Reschen. This led to a severe defeat in the local council elections on October 4, 1992 and the loss of the absolute majority, which is why Lettner resigned from the mayor's office in 1992. Until 1994, Lettner was only a member of the Salzburg City Council.

In other functions, Lettner was president of the Salzburg Adult Education Center from 1990 to 1992, chairman of the supervisory board of the Salzburger Sparkasse from 1990 to 1992 and a member of the supervisory board of GSWB from 1993 to 1998. From 1981 to 1989 he was a committee member of the Salzburg Bar Association, from 1978 to 2006 a member of the board of trustees of the “Pro Juventute Children's Village Association” and from 1995 to 1999 a member of the board of directors of “Rettet das Kind” and a member of the supervisory board of the “Verein Geselte Werkstätten”.
