Josef Emanuel Meienberg

Josef Emanuel Meienberg (born October 30, 1812 in Bremgarten , Canton Aargau ; † November 13, 1886 ibid) was a Swiss philologist , teacher , rector and politician .

life and work

Meienberg came from a long-established family and was the son of the politician and town clerk Emanuel. Meienberg studied theology for two years with FJ Weissenbach and another year at the University of Tübingen at the Lyceum of the higher education and training institute in Solothurn . Meienberg later turned to philology and the subject.

Meienberg was elected as main teacher at the Bremgarten district school in 1835. From 1837 to 1872 he was its rector. Meienberg became school inspector in 1838 and from 1852 a member of the teachers' examination commission. A year later he became inspector of the teachers' college and from 1863 a member of the cantonal education council. Meienberg advocates the promotion and improvement of the Aargau school system in lectures and publications.

Meienberg entered politics in 1841 as a member of the Council of States . Together with the politician Xaver Wiederkehr (1812–1886) he led the opposition group, most of which were recruited from the Catholic Freiamt. Both campaigned for the interests of the Catholic Church and monasteries. In 1849 Meienberg refused to be re-elected to the council. His successor was Plazid Weissenbach .

Meienberg was elected district administrator in 1872 for his services to the school system and for his courageous advocacy for the rights of the Catholic part of the population.
