Josef Gelegs (born February 17, 1913 in Vienna ; † December 28, 1969 there ) was an Austrian football player .

In the 1933/34 season Gelegs was a professional soccer striker at Rapid Vienna , in 1935/36 he played at Wolfsberger AC , from 1936 at Post SV Vienna . In 1939 Gelegs was forced to do military service, he had to go to the front in France and later to Russia and was used by the German Wehrmacht as a telecommunications operator. In 1943 Josef Gelegs was taken prisoner by the Soviets near Stalingrad . Thanks to his excellent knowledge of Russian, he survived as he worked as the camp doctor's interpreter. Gelegs was released in 1948/49 and was allowed to return to Vienna. He died of lung cancer in December 1969 .
Gelegs was married to Maria Gelegs (née Machala). His grandson is ORF correspondent Mag. Ernst Gelegs.
