Josef Gerhard Cornelius ( 1783 in Düsseldorf - October 11, 1843 in Wiesbaden ) was a German theater actor and director .

Life

His father was the engraver and actor Ignaz Cornelius (1764–1806) and appointed his son for the stage. He stepped on the boards in Amsterdam in 1813 and chose a subject that young actors seldom take up, namely the father's subject. From 1813 to 1817 he was engaged in Aachen and also married the daughter of his director Schirmer here. In 1817 he took an engagement in Aschaffenburg, then came to Würzburg and there followed a call to Mainz.

Here he established his reputation as an outstanding actor and brought his talent to full advantage (1820–1826). He was reluctant to leave Mainz and joined the Darmstadt Court Theater Association (1826–1829). But when his friend, director August Haake, took over the management of the Mainz theater, he gladly followed him where he had not been forgotten for a long time, where his reappearance was greeted with jubilation. Disputes of all kinds caused him, however, to leave Mainz again and to go to Cologne for a year. Meanwhile the management changed and Cornelius was immediately called back to Mainz, where he worked again until 1839. After that he only worked as a guest. When he made a guest appearance in Wiesbaden in 1843, he fell seriously ill and died there too.

He also worked as a director.

The painter Aloys Cornelius (1748–1800) was his uncle.
