Josef Giesen (* 1958 ) is a former German disabled athlete .

Career

Josef Giesen comes from the Emsland . He is severely disabled because his mother took Contergan during her pregnancy , so he was born without arms. Since Josef Giesen really wanted to do sports, he became a member of VfL Herzlake . He chose biathlon as a sport . To do this, it was necessary to develop a special rifle with which one could shoot without arms. He was therefore given a rifle design with which one could shoot with the mouth without arms.

In addition to biathlon, he also did cross-country skiing in Nordic skiing . His performance in both sports disciplines was so good that he was appointed to the German National Paralympic team in 2002 . At these games he won a gold medal in 7.5 km cross-country skiing.

He was also at the Winter Paralympics 2006 in Turin . Here, too, he was one of the German medalists, as he finished second over 7.5 km and thus won the silver medal.

Finally, he ended his active sports career at the Paralympic Winter Games 2010 with a third place and winning a bronze medal in the biathlon over 12.5 km.

For winning the gold medal at the Paralympic Winter Games in 2002, he received the Silver Laurel Leaf .
