Josef Kehl , also Joseph, (born March 9, 1885 in Haßfurt , † October 2, 1967 there ) was a German fossil collector and local researcher .

His main occupation was a master painter in Haßfurt, where he also worked as a chronicler of the city and local history researcher (he was a district home keeper and archive keeper). Kehl spent a semester at the arts and crafts school in Nuremberg and after an apprenticeship with his father (painting and whitewashing trade) and in Rosenheim on a wandering to Naples in the south, through Switzerland and in the north to Magdeburg. From 1914 to 1918 he was a volunteer in the First World War and received the Iron Cross 1st and 2nd Class, the Bavarian Cross of Merit with Swords and the Badge for Wounded. In 1920 he was the leader of the Resident Army in Haßfurt, for a long time chief master of the painters and whitewashers guild and from 1925 to 1945 a member of the city council of Haßfurt.

He secured the documents on the city's history in a room in the town hall and published a chronicle of Haßfurt in 1945. He also took care of the preservation of historical buildings, especially the knight's chapel .

He collected fossils from the Keuper Franconia, especially animal tracks. Karl Beurlen named after him the dinosaur Coelurosaurichnus kehli Beurlen in 1950, whose tracks Kehl found.

Karl Mägdefrau worked on his plants from the Keuper . The largest part of his collection is in the geological institute of the University of Erlangen , to which he left his collection of plants, fish and tracks from the Keuper. His finds mostly came from three quarries in the Haßberge (near Zeil-Schmachtenberg), which stratigraphically belong to the Coburg building sandstone (lower Semionote sandstone ).

He had been an honorary citizen of Haßfurt since 1948 and received the Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, 1st and 2nd class. His son Hansmartin Kehl (born July 9, 1922 in Bamberg) was also a master painter in Haßfurt and city archivist.
