Joseph Lehmann (also Josef; born November 28, 1832 in Berlin ; † January 11, 1907 in Hamburg ) was a German Baptist theologian, writer and teacher at the German Baptist seminary .

Life

Joseph Lehmann was a son of Gottfried Wilhelm Lehmann , who, along with Johann Gerhard Oncken and Julius Köbner, was one of the most important founding personalities of the German Baptist movement. At the age of fourteen Joseph Lehmann was baptized and became a member of the Berlin Baptist Congregation. After graduating from high school , he was the first German Baptist to study Protestant theology - first at the University of Berlin and then at Regent's Park College at the University of Oxford , where he spent four semesters studying the history and theology of Baptism.

In 1857 he returned to Germany and assisted Johann Gerhard Oncken in the translation and editing of sermons and essays by the English Baptist pastor Charles Haddon Spurgeon . At the same time he took on part-time duties as a teacher at the mission school founded by Oncken. He then worked as a Baptist preacher in Lübeck and then from 1863 as a second pastor alongside his father in Berlin. In 1883 he returned to Hamburg and took over a chair for homiletics at the seminary of the German Baptists . He held this office for 24 years - until his death in 1907.
