The hat maker Josef Pichler (1824–1864) founded a hat maker shop in Hartberg (Styria) . In 1857 he moved the company to Graz and in 1848 set up the Josef Pichler & Sons hat factory on Grieskai . His main focus was on the production of Styrian loden hats for hunting and tourist purposes . As demand increased sharply, Pichler increasingly used machines in production. After his sons Josef and Anton had gained experience in the hat making business in Germany , France and the USA , they joined the company in 1880.

The company grew quickly. In the meantime, only loden hats were made. The factory achieved almost inimitable results in terms of the quality and taste of the forms. The hats were not only sold domestically, but also exported to Germany and Switzerland . The aristocracy was also one of Pichler's customers. He was appointed Duke of Saxony-Meiningen 's court hat manufacturer. Due to the high quality of the products, the company received the kk farm title . The factory was now called the kuk Hof-Hutfabrik .

The previous premises became increasingly inadequate, so that in 1879 a new building was built at Körösistraße 1 in Graz. The facility corresponded to the most modern technical requirements of the time.

After the death of the partner Josef Pichler sen. and his son Anton At the end of the 1890s, the company was owned by the younger son Josef jun. over. Around 1900 the company was enlarged again, as the existing buildings had once again proven to be too small for the increasing number of companies.

The company was able to continue to exist despite the turmoil of World War I and the collapse of the monarchy. In 1930, the 24-year-old chemical technician Gustav Scherbaum (1906–1991) from Vienna was placed as a dyeing technician by the Vienna Employment Office at the Pichler company . He was later elected mayor of the city of Graz.

During the Second World War , the company produced tropical helmets for the Wehrmacht, which they needed in the African campaign .
