Josef Schelling

Josef Schelling (born January 14, 1909 in Schwarzach as Johann Josef Schelling ; † January 6, 1983 ibid) was an Austrian politician ( FPÖ ) and machine manufacturer.

education and profession

Schelling attended elementary school in his home town of Schwarzach for five years and then moved to the Mehrerau grammar school for two years. He graduated from business school between 1922 and 1924 and then learned to be a mechanic between 1924 and 1927. In December 1927 he passed the journeyman's examination and in March 1931 the master’s examination. Schelling was employed as a mechanic journeyman between 1927 and 1931, after which he worked as a commercial clerk from 1931 to 1935. From 1935 he was a managing partner of the Schelling company.

Politics and functions

Schelling was a member of the Freedom Party and worked within the party from 1967 as a member of the state party executive of the FPÖ Vorarlberg and from 1965 as a member of the state party leadership of the FPÖ Vorarlberg. He was also a finance officer for the FPÖ Vorarlberg. In 1966 he replaced Werner Melter as a member of the Bregenz constituency in the Vorarlberg state parliament, to which he belonged until he resigned in 1976. During this time he was a member of the finance committee, member of the social policy committee, member of the economic committee, member of the legal committee, member and deputy chairman of the control committee and member of the agricultural committee.

Schelling was active in local politics between 1955 and 1965 as a member of the Grundverkehr-Ortskommission Schwarzach, from 1949 to 1968 he was also the state guild master of mechanics and at the same time active as a member and chairman of various journeyman and master craftsman examination commissions. He also worked as a member of the Federal Mechanics Committee, was Deputy Federal Guild Master for Mechanics and Chamber Council of the Trade Section and member of the Chamber's General Assembly of the Vorarlberg Chamber of Commerce. He was also involved as a board member of the Federal Chamber and the Federal Chamber of Commerce, was a delegate at the Federal Chamber of Commerce in 1968 and from 1965 to 1970 a member of the WIFI Board of Trustees. In addition, he was regional chairman of the ring of liberal businessmen and from 1970 to 1980 Vice-President of the Vorarlberg Chamber of Commerce.

Private

Schelling was born as the son of the mechanic Johann Georg Schelling and his wife Anna Maria Philomena Schelling. In August 1932 he married Margarethe Meusburger, who was also from Schwarzach, and had a daughter in 1933 and a son in 1936.
