Josep Vinyals i Galí OSB (* 1771 in Terrassa ; † 1825 there ) was a Catalan composer, organist and instrumentalist from the Montserrat monastery .

life and work

Josep Vinyals was trained musically at the Escolania de Montserrat . There he was a student of Anselm Viola and Narcís Casanoves . In 1790 he entered the Benedictine order and the Montserrat monastery as a monk. There he made a name for himself as a violinist, cellist and organist. After the Napoleonic raids on Montserrat in 1811/1812 he was involved in the re-establishment of the Escolania ( Choralschola ) and the recovery and restoration of musical works. In 1792 he became Kapellmeister of Escolania and organist of the Montserrat monastery. In his later years he went to the Benedictine monastery of Sant Benet de Bages as an organist . He died in 1825 in Terrassa, the town he was born in, to which he had gone to restore his ailing health.

Vinyals composed works for keyboard instruments. His collection of organ sonatas from 1797 deserves special mention. His corpus for various instruments, for example the six quintets for two oboes, two horns and bassoon, are also worth mentioning. In addition, Vinyals copied various works of his teacher Narcís Casanoves after they were initially lost in the Napoleonic turmoil.
