Joseph Anton Rohe (born May 1, 1814 in Kleinwallstadt ; † February 12, 1892 in Rome ) was a German merchant and founder.

Life

Coming from a poor background, Rohe completed a commercial apprenticeship in a Frankfurt wagon company with the support of the community. In 1840, at the age of 26, he moved to Paris and opened a jewelry store with a business partner. Five years later he emigrated to the USA and initially only worked as a hairdresser assistant.

It soon became apparent that there was a shortage of musical instruments in America and that trading in them promised good profits. So Rohe sold all of his property, acquired musical instruments in Europe and opened a music store in New York.

Rohe mostly financed his overseas crossings by working on them as a sailor or coal shipper, although at that time he already had a considerable fortune. Between his travels he visited his homeland again and again.

By trading in instruments, Rohe achieved considerable wealth, which he multiplied by speculating in stocks during the War of Secession to a fortune in the millions.

In 1875, at the age of 60, Rohe sold his New York business and purchased property in his native Kleinwallstadt. Since Rohe did not have a family of his own to which he could bequeath his fortune, he set up a foundation in his later years to alleviate hardship and poverty in his home community. For this purpose he had a building erected, which was later called the Rohe'sche Villa and which is now part of a senior citizens' home.

Rohe spent his retirement alternately in Kleinwallstadt and Rome, where he also owned a villa with vineyards. Rohe died there in Rome on February 12, 1892 of complications from pneumonia. After the transfer, his body was buried on March 27th on the Wallstadt foundation site, in a mausoleum that Rohe had built in 1885. It is still part of the foundation park today.

The Josef-Anton-Rohe-Grundschule and the Josef-Anton-Rohe-Mittelschule in Kleinwallstadt are named after Rohe.
