from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Joseph Barsabbas , called "Justus" ("the righteous"), was an early Christian named in the New Testament.

After Judas Iscariot's death , a candidate for his successor was to be chosen to fill the number of twelve apostles . The Acts of the Apostles states as a prerequisite for such a candidate: He must be one of the men who have been with us (the other apostles) during all the time that the Lord Jesus came and went with us, namely from baptism of John until the day on which he was received. With us he should become a witness of his resurrection. ( Acts 1,21  EU ) The choice was Joseph Barsabbas and Matthias . Matthias was finally determined by lot.

Joseph Barsabbas is traditionally counted among the Seventy Disciples . In the Legenda aurea from the 13th century, Joseph Barsabbas appears as the cousin of Jesus. Since Judas Barsabbas from Acts 15.22  EU had the same surname as Joseph, it is assumed that both were brothers.

Joseph Barsabbas is venerated as a saint ; his feast day is July 20th .
