Joseph Lau

Joseph Lau Luen Hung (Chinese: 劉 鑾 雄) (born July 21, 1951 in Hong Kong ) is a Hong Kong entrepreneur, convicted felon and refugee. He has a 61% stake in Chinese Estates Holdings . Forbes estimates his fortune in 2019 to 16.19 billion US dollars , making it one of the 100 richest people in the world.

His father was Foo Wing Lau, a wealthy Hong Kong businessman who owned a fan company. Joseph Lau married Theresa, Po Wing-kam in 1977. They have a son, Lau Ming-wai (* 1980) and a daughter, Jade Lau Sau-yung (* 1983). The marriage ended in divorce in 1992. From a relationship with the Hong Kong Chinese Yvonne Lui, he has a daughter, Sau Lau-ying (* 2002) and a son, Chi Lau-fung (* 2010). Lau has two other children with Kimbie Chan, a former journalist: a daughter, Josephine Sau Lau-wah (* 2008) and a son, Chung Lau-hok (* 2012). On December 7, 2016, he married Kimbie Chan (Chan Hoi-wan).

Joseph Lau has a younger brother and two younger sisters.

Life and business career

Lau studied at the University of Windsor in Canada. After graduating, he first worked in his father's company. He made his fortune through real estate deals in Hong Kong. In 1978 he founded Evergo Holdings Company, which manufactured electronic products such as ceiling fans, lights, and kerosene heaters. In 1983 the company went public. In 1986 Evergo acquired 43% of Chines Estate Limited CEL. CEL is one of the largest Chinese investment firms, based in Hong Kong, engaged in real estate investment and development, securities investments and financial services. Lau has been Executive Director of the company since 2006 and its Deputy Chairman from December 2010. On March 14, 2014, he resigned as Chairman of Chinese Estates after being convicted of bribery and money laundering in Macau.

Lau owns two private jets. His wine collection includes 10,000 bottles. His art collection, including Gauguin , Hockney, and Warhol , is valued at $ 1 billion. In 2010 he bought Warhol's Green Car Crash for 71.7 million US dollars, in 2015 The Ring (engagement) by Roy Lichtenstein at Sotheby's New York for 41.7 million US dollars and also in 2015 the painting Buste de femme (1938) by Pablo Picasso at Christie's for $ 67.4 million.

Legal proceedings

In 2014, he was found guilty in Macau of bribing city officials with Hong Kong dollars 20 million to get building land and was sentenced to more than 5 years in prison. Lau has so far escaped extradition and remains at large as a refugee as Macau and Hong Kong do not have an extradition treaty.
