Joseph Nash (born December 17, 1809 in Great Marlow , Buckinghamshire , † December 19, 1878 in London ) was an English watercolor painter and lithographer , known for his skilful depictions of Gothic architecture and historic buildings.

Nash was the eldest son of a minister who ran the Manor House School in Croydon . He later studied with the artist and architect Augustus Charles Pugin , under whom he developed into a skilful draftsman, especially of Gothic architecture. In 1829 he traveled to Paris with Pugin, where he assisted in creating the drawings for Paris and its Environs , published in 1830 .

Nash turned to lithography at an early stage and, for example, provided the stone drawings for Pugin's book Views Illustrative of Examples of Ghotic Architecture , published in 1830 . He also illustrated novels and poetry . However, he paid particular attention to picturesque mansions from the 16th century (see: Tudor style ) and their magnificent interiors. Hampton Court Palace and Speke Hall , for example, were structures that Nash often depicted. In 1838 he published Architecture of the Middle Ages .

From 1839 onwards, Nash's four-volume work Mansions of England in the Olden Time was created over a period of 10 years . To bring together the abundance of images, he traveled across the country. In doing so, he concentrated on the architectural aspects of the buildings and skillfully enlivened their representation with figure staffage. The work became extremely popular and the lithographs it contained were widely used; they were even said to have an influence on the (increasing) number of visitors to historical buildings.
