Joseph Roesberg , also Johann Joseph Roesberg (born August 31, 1824 in Cologne ; † July 23, 1871 there ) was a German composer , local poet and is considered the first important Cologne folk singer .

Life

Grave at Melaten Cemetery (2018)

In 1845 Roesberg took over the Em Hahnen wine tavern in Minoritenstrasse, which he ran as the owner for 18 years. Roesberg, who was active in the carnival, wrote over 60, predominantly Cologne, milieu songs. In the first few years of the Festordnenden Committee in particular , he created a basis of identity-creating compositions with dialectic texts about events in the history of the city.

His song about a servant girl from Ossendorf , the Schnüsse Tring , gave the local carnival club its name in 1901. The songs of Roesberg were his friend, among others, by interpreting Johann Joseph Palm , called Urjels palm , known as the organ grinder has done much to spread the folk tunes.

Joseph Roesberg was buried in the Melaten cemetery in Cologne (Lit E, between HWG and Lit H). The tomb, originally designed by Jean Nothen, was badly damaged in a bomb attack in 1944 and cleared in 1964. The remains of the tombstone could be saved from final destruction and have been in a front garden in the Iltisstraße in Neuehrenfeld for years . In 2000, the tomb in Melaten was reconstructed - on the basis of a historical design drawing and with the remaining parts - at the instigation of the old Cologne carnival society Schnüsse Tring 1901 eV , which also took care of the tomb care.

Honor

Joseph Roesberg-Platz with the Schnüsse Tring fountain in front of the Trinity Church in Ossendorf

In the Cologne district of Ehrenfeld , in recognition of his life's work, a square was named after the Cologne song composer and a Schnüsse-Tring fountain was erected, which commemorates his most famous song.
