Joseph Ruggles Wilson
Joseph Ruggles Wilson (born February 28, 1822 in Steubenville , Ohio , † January 21, 1903 in Princeton (New Jersey) ) was an American Presbyterian pastor and theologian .
After his ordination in 1848, Wilson worked as a teacher at Hampden-Sydney College in Hampden Sydney , Virginia and as a parish priest in Staunton (Virginia) (1855–57), in Augusta (Georgia) (1857–70) and in Wilmington ( North Carolina) (1874-85). Most recently he was a professor at Southwestern Presbyterian University in Clarksville (Tennessee) .
Wilson was one of the leaders of the Presbyterian Church in the United States in the southern states, which had split off from the Presbyterians of the northern states in 1861 because of the slave question, and acted in their highest office as moderator of the General Assembly from 1879 . He used the reformed federal theology to justify slavery. His eldest son was US President Woodrow Wilson .
