Joseph Bell

The Joseph Bell is bell 6 of the Cologne cathedral bells . It was cast in 1998 by Hans August Mark and Cornelia Mark-Maas in Brockscheid (Eifel) and is hung in the belfry of the south tower.

History and meaning

The previous bell was cast in 1990 by the same foundry in the same shape and tone. In 1998 it suffered a crack and was replenished true to the original. The reasons for casting this bell were twofold. On the one hand, the Ursula bell should be relieved, as it showed very high signs of wear. On the other hand, the upper tone range of the main bell, which until then only consisted of the major triad c 1 –e 1 –g 1 , should be filled. The Joseph bell was therefore arranged to strike note d 1 in order to be able to distribute the resulting musical ringing combinations (motifs) over the church year.

In honor of St. Joseph and in memory of Cardinal Joseph Frings and Cardinal Joseph Höffner, donated by the Cologne Civil Society in 1863 and cast by Hans August and Cornelia Charlotte Mark in Brockscheid.

Translation: The angel Gabriel was sent by God to a city in Galilee called Nazareth to a virgin who was trusted to a man named Joseph of the house of David; and the virgin was called Mary. And the angel came in to her and said, Greetings, full of grace. The Lord is with you.

Ringing order

The Joseph bell rings on (festless) working days, except on Thursdays, after 7:30 p.m. following the 3 × 3 strikes of the three kings bell to the angel of the Lord . On certain feast days, which fall on a working day, as well as at the Sunday masses during the penance and solemn festival times, the Joseph bell rings in combination with other bells of the main bell.
