Cologne cathedral bells

The bells of Cologne Cathedral are one of the largest and most historically significant cathedral bells ever, whose individuality is based on the combination of eleven very characteristic bells .

The supporting foundation of the cathedral bells is the St. Peter's Bell , which was cast in 1923 and weighed around 24 tons ; it is one of the largest ringing bells in the world. With the delivery of its predecessor to the First World War , the so-called Imperial Bell from 1874, as well as the breakage and crash of the clapper in 2011, it has a special history.

Main bell in the south tower

The main bell hangs in the south tower. It includes 8 bells hanging in a steel bell cage. The bell cage is divided into three compartments. In the middle compartment hangs the Petersglocke from 1923, which is affectionately known by the Cologne residents as the D'r decke Pitter or decker Pitter (i.e. fat Peter). The two large late medieval bells hang one behind the other in the northern compartment (the Pretiosa from 1448 and the Speciosa from 1449). The remaining five bells hang one behind the other in the southern compartment; in the upper half hang the two bells from the end of the 19th century (Epiphany bell and Ursula bell), in the lower half the three small bells (Joseph's bell, chapter bell and ave bell). All bells are driven electrically, the Petersbell by two motors.
