History and meaning

When the three kings bell broke for the second time in 1862, the cathedral chapter decided to buy a fourth bell, the Ursula bell . It was cast in the same year by Joseph Beduwe in Aachen and commemorates the completion of the nave. In the middle of the Latin inscription there is a relief of St. Ursula . Further designs complete the picture.

Translation : When the nave of the cathedral church was completed, in order to achieve a fuller harmony of the bells, I was cast at the expense of the factory and St. Ursula, the patroness of the city of Cologne, consecrated in 1862. John the Holy Roman Church Cardinal von Geißel , Archbishop of Cologne .
Joseph Beduwe from Aachen cast me.

Ringing order

The Ursula Bell is the death knell of the Cathedral Parish. On Thursday at 7:30 p.m. it will ring in memory of Christ's agony on the Mount of Olives . On Sundays it forms the basis of the bells for masses. The motifs vary depending on the church season:

Sunday masses Bells
Sundays during Advent Ursula and Joseph (5 and 6)
Sundays during Christmas time Ursula, Joseph and Chapters (5, 6 and 7)
Sundays during Lent Ursula and Joseph (5 and 6)
Sundays during Easter Ursula, Joseph and Chapters (5, 6 and 7)
Sundays in the annual cycle Ursula, Kapitel and Ave (5, 7 and 8)
