Jossyp Dawydowytsch Vitebskyj ( Ukrainian Йо́сип Дави́дович Ві́тебський ; born January 9, 1938 in Kiev , Ukrainian SSR ) is a former Soviet sword fencer and trainer.
Life
Jossyp Vitebskyj was world champion with the team in Montreal in 1967 . At the Olympic Games in Mexico City in 1968 he reached the final unbeaten with the Soviet team, in which they had to admit defeat to Hungary 4-7. Together with Hryhorij Kriss , Viktor Modsolewski , Alexei Nikantschikow and Yuri Smoljakow he received the silver medal. Vitebskyj won the national championship ten times.
He graduated from the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kiev with a degree in sports science. After his active career, he initially coached the national team of the Ukrainian SSR for 13 years, from 1988 to 1998 he was then director of university sports at his alma mater . He then began working as a trainer at the University of Pennsylvania . Vitebskyj is married and has two sons.
